At Radio One/CSE Crosscom, we’ve gathered answers to the most frequently asked questions about key topics like school safety, the latest technology in education, and more. If you don’t see what you’re looking for, feel free to reach out—our team is always here to help!

Q: What are the best ways to detect unusual or concerning behavior in school environments?

There are more options than ever for supporting school safety and detecting unusual behavior. Video surveillance cameras and video analytics can help prevent unauthorized access and track any incidents or unusual behavior. Access control provides access to those who should have it while preventing unauthorized entry by those who shouldn’t. Vape detection is a newer technology that helps schools identify and prevent vaping on school grounds. All of these technologies work together to support greater awareness and safety in schools of all sizes.

For staff and students, cell phones can be used for location sharing, emergency alerts and quick connections. However, two-way radios can be an even better option for schools.

Two-way radios offer the ability to connect and share information with staff and first responders in everyday and emergency situations and have extended battery life and range—even in places like stairwells, elevators and parking garages—so they won’t let you down in critical moments.

Two-way radios can also be hands-free with voice-activated transmission. And they remain operational during emergencies, unlike public cellular networks that can go down due to overloading. Finally, two-way radios are durable indoors and outdoors in all conditions so they are often a better alternative than cell phones for schools.

Kid and teen use of the internet and mobile devices continues to skyrocket, making internet safety a top priority for many parents and schools alike.

Schools should create and regularly update an internet safety policy and educate staff, students and parents on the policy, explaining the risk of everything from cyberbullying to online predators and scams.

Schools should share the importance of never giving out personal information online and using strong passwords to prevent hackers from gaining access. Finally, make sure your school security software remains updated and that computers are located in common areas. Internet safety should be part of your daily school operations. As technology continues to advance and evolve, make sure you are regularly assessing safe and smart use.

School safety is a top priority and there are several steps you can take to enhance safety and security throughout your school or campus. This can include:

  • Secure and monitor access to buildings: You can monitor staff, students and visitor access to all buildings with a single system that offers text message and text-to-voice alerts on radios or smartphones whenever there is an issue or breach. You can also monitor individuals across school locations with video technology.
  • Be aware at all times: Proactive awareness of unusual activity can incorporate specialized cameras, video analytics and video security that can check for everything from certain license plates to vehicles driving the wrong way to attempted after-hours access. You can also receive critical alerts via two-way radio that include camera analytics.
  • Communicate. Make sure you have communication plans for both emergency and everyday situations and that you stay in touch with relevant parties. You should be able to connect in clear and timely ways and be able to reach administration, security, staff, bus drivers, parents and students with mass notifications.
  • Update. Regularly review and update school policies and procedures, technology and security to support overall school safety.

Access control can allow custom access to restricted areas within your school and detect open doors, while triggering alerts to the office and school resource officer.  In addition, unified video and access control technology allows you to instantly verify if the person seen carding in on camera matches the profile picture of the access card that individual is using.

As more students use mobile devices to do their school work and connect with others, wireless signals are an important issue in schools and on school buses.

However, materials like concrete, steel, energy-efficient glass and more can block wireless signals, and areas such as stairwells, basements, elevators and parking garages can also present challenges for schools. Fortunately, there are a variety of effective solutions for schools.

At Radio One/CSE Crosscom we design and deploy wireless coverage solutions for both indoor and outdoor school environments. Bi-Directional Amplifiers or BDAs are signal boosters that support two-way radio and cellular communications throughout a school and across campus – improving communication in challenging areas that might not otherwise receive a wireless signal. These amplifiers boost and distribute a signal covering various frequencies and are traditionally part of a Distributed Antenna System (DAS), a network of antennas that receive external signals. Collectively, BDA/DAS equipment is often referred to as wireless in-building solutions.

A BDA/DAS can make it easier to communicate both on a daily basis and during an emergency situation. Radio One/CSE Crosscom can also help you assess areas of need and provide solutions for better wireless coverage. In addition, we can ensure that your school is in compliance with all local codes and regulations.

Radio One/CSE Crosscom can work with your school or district’s budget and needs to determine the best and most affordable options to secure and update school communications and technology. We can also update your current system, train new staff and administration, and ensure your technology remains up to code.
